Rural Schools Poster Competition 2010
Students at country schools are invited to prepare an image illustrating mental health and wellbeing for this year’s poster competition. A winner will be chosen from each region and this student’s image will be used to produce a poster to promote Mental Health Week. The poster will be available for distribution to local shops, libraries, schools and other community facilities. Entries are still being accepted. The closing date is Friday 30th July.
These school competitions are a means of increasing awareness of mental health issues among young people. They encourage open discussion about mental health issues affecting young people.
How much do students know about mental illness?
How much do students know about depression and other mood disorders?
Do students know where to access support when they experience stress at school and at home? Do they know how to ask for help when needed?
Would students recognise when a friend is experiencing a mental health problem and know who to turn to?
These and other questions can be raised during preparation for the competitions.
As the emphasis is on positive mental health wellbeing teachers can also talk about activities and thinking that strengthen students’ sense of competence and belief in themselves.

Mental Health Week Consumer Art Competition 2010
The Foundation is an association of committed individuals whose members include people with experience of mental illness, mental health professionals from a broad range of disciplines and people interested in promoting awareness of mental health.
We share one common goal – the development of healthy individuals and communities, through the promotion of mental health and wellbeing and the de-stigmatisation of mental disorders.
Each year the Foundation invites artists across Victoria to create an innovative piece of artwork that portrays an optimistic and positive image of mental health. The artwork is judged on its suitability for reproduction on a poster that will promote Mental Health Week throughout Victoria.
Mental Health Week itself is an essential part of promoting a positive view of mental health to the wider community.
This year's entries once again display the varied creative approaches of individual artists from all over Victoria. Some are working alone. Others have been supported in their endeavours by joining art therapy groups of all kinds.
Our thanks are extended to all the artists who have entered. Their efforts, as well as being personally rewarding, help to promote awareness of mental health and wellbeing.
The competition is for anyone with an experience of mental illness. All works received are displayed at Mental Health House, 270 Church Street, Richmond. The exhibition is is free and open to the public.
