Treating Anorexia Nervosa: A Collaborative Approach

Presented by Professor Richard Newton, Medical Director of Mental Health Clinical Services Unit, Austin Health, Heidelberg, Victoria.
Consultant Psychiatrist, Eating Disorders Programme, Austin Health.

In 2009, Professor Newton was awarded the The Margaret Tobin RANZCP Award for “the most significant contribution to administrative psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand during the previous 5 years”.

Edinburgh trained, Professor Newton's distinguished record in psychiatry includes work in both Scotland and Melbourne.  He developed the Homeless Outreach Psychiatric Service in Melbourne in the1990s, while at the same time working as a consultant in public and private Eating Disorder Services. This experience resulted in a new day-program approach for severe anorexia.

He has a wide range of research interests and has published on de-institutionalisation, community psychiatry, homelessness, substance abuse, cognitive impairment, eating disorders and CBT.

We are fortunate in having Professor Newton take part in our seminar program to talk about an approach he has found helpful in treating Anorexia Nervosa.
